Coleman was founded in 1900 when W.C. Coleman sold lanterns to Kingfisher, Oklahoma merchants to pay for his final year of law school. His lanterns’ popularity grew rapidly and by 1914, Coleman introduced the first 300 candlepower lantern. The product was credited with lighting up rural America.
Over time the company continued to evolve with the introduction of the fold-up camp stove (1923). During the Great Depression the company began manufacturing gas floor furnaces and oil space heaters. By 1958, the Coleman Company had entered the Heating & Air Conditioning industry.
Today Coleman Heating & Air Conditioning is one of the core residential brands sold by York, a Johnson Controls Company which is a $30-billion+ manufacturer of heating and air conditioning equipment. Coleman HVAC prides itself on encouraging professionalism through North American Technician Excellence, Inc. (NATE). NATE is the leading certification program for technicians in the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) industry, and is the only test supported by the entire industry.
