The San Francisco Bay Area, also known as the Bay Area, is a metropolitan region that surrounds the San Francisco and San Pablo estuaries in Northern California. The San Francisco Bay Area is known for many things including its stunning beauty, exposure to earthquakes, and its wild and unpredictable temperature swings. Bay Area residents have several running jokes in this regard, including, “if you don’t like the weather, just drive a few miles”.

The San Francisco Bay Area is broken down into several subregions, as follows:

  • San Francisco (refers to the city)
  • North Bay (encompasses Marin County, Sonoma County, Napa County and cities such as San Rafael, Novato, Santa Rosa)
  • Peninsula (i.e. East Palo Alto, Woodside, Portola Valley, Atherton, Menlo Park, San Mateo, South San Francisco, etc.)
  • East Bay (i.e. Oakland, Hayward, Fremont, Berkeley, Richmond, Concord, Pleasanton, Livermore, San Ramon, etc.)
  • Silicon Valley (i.e. San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos, Saratoga, Campbell,Los Gatos, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, etc.)
  • Santa Cruz and San Benito (i.e. and cities such as Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Ben Lomond, Felton, Scotts Valley, etc.)

San Francisco Bay Area residents know all too well that the metro area is subjected to a wide range in temperatures throughout the year. Often times, your weather is most dependent upon exactly where you live. It’s not unusual at all for it to be in the 50’s (Fahrenheit) in downtown San Francisco, but the 70’s or 80’s in Marin County, East Bay, San Jose or Oakland. In fact, the weather is so crazy at times that many Bay Area residents have stories of using both their furnace and air conditioner in the same day!

The San Francisco metro area’s widely and quickly varying temperatures place a great deal of stress on both your heating and air conditioning units. Much like an automobile, your air conditioner can often make it through long periods of neglect.  Eventually, however, the lack of maintenance will often catch up to it, possibly lead to costly repairs or replacement! Not only that, but it is estimated that an air conditioning unit loses up to 5% of its original efficiency for each year that it’s not properly serviced. As a result, the costs of regular maintenance are easily recovered by the efficiency that your AC unit is able to maintain.

The same logic applies to your furnace. The widely varying area temperatures often require your furnace to work overtime. As a result, the furnace in a Greater San Francisco metro area home is placed under a great deal of operating stress each winter. Here too, the furnace may survive long periods of neglect by nothing more than a reduction in its efficiency. But if completely neglected, sooner or later a large repair bill could be staring you in the face – or worse, unit replacement!
